About Joanna

Joanna Powell Colbert is a sacred artist, earth mystic, moon lover, and caller of circles. She is the creator of the Gaian Tarot and the majors-only Pentimento Tarot, and is the co-creator of the Herbcrafter’s Tarot. She has taught workshops and online courses for over 30 years on earth-­centered spirituality, seasonal contemplative practices, creativity as a devotional path, and using the Tarot for inner guidance and self­-exploration. She lives on the edge of woods and lake near the Salish Sea in the Pacific Northwest.

About the Gaian Tarot

I picked up my first tarot deck in 1970 and began studying the tarot in depth in the 1980s. I had a desire to create my own deck, but wasn’t sure of a focus until I realized I could combine my love of the natural world with the rich, archetypal imagery of the tarot. The Gaian Tarot grew out of my relationship with the natural world where I live (the coastal Pacific Northwest) and the people in my neighborhood and spiritual community.

As I meditated on the meaning of each card and the fresh interpretation I might bring to it, I asked these questions: “What about the earth? What does the voice of the earth have to say? Where is nature in the meaning of this card?”

I began creating the Gaian Tarot in 2000; it took me nine years to complete the artwork and book. I published a collector’s edition of 1000 copies in 2010, and there were two mass-market editions before the 2025 version published by REDFeather/Schiffer.

I’m grateful the deck has had such a long life and devoted following. Once the deck was in the hands of readers, it took on a life of its own. My understanding of the deck has been enhanced by feedback from readers over the years. Some of those insights have made their way into the new, 2025 edition. The artwork remains the same, but I’ve revised and updated the book. The Wheel turns, always. Everything old is new again.
