Interviews with Joanna
Interviewed by Donnaleigh de la Rose and Theresa Reed
on Blog Talk Radio: Beyond Worlds (June 2010)
Interviewed by Goddess Leonie of Goddess Guidebook (October 2009)
“Hola gorgeous Goddesses!
A special post to share with you today… an interview with Joanna Powell Colbert, the creator of the Gaian Tarot. Joanna has been in the process of creating her Tarot for ten years now, documenting it along the way on her website – and the deck is finally complete!
I’ve been watching Joanna create the deck for about four years, and adore the way she uses the Tarot concepts, and transforms them into her own love song about the earth, the goddess and her spiritual journey.”

Interviewed by Catherine Chapman of Tarot Elements (September 2009)
“CC: Where did the Gaian Tarot begin for you?
JPC: I had the desire to create a deck of my own back in the mid-80′s when I was deep into Goddess and Tarot studies, especially of the Motherpeace and RWS decks. But the thought of painting 78 cards was daunting. (Little did I know . . .) Later on, in the late 90′s, I went through a period of time where I let go of all my esoteric interests like tarot, astrology and ritual. I moved to a small, rural island, built a straw bale house with my husband and started a wilderness awareness course of studies — learning about the native plants and animals, going deep into the Spirit of Place.”

Interviewed by James Ricklef of James Ricklef’s Tarot Blog (December 2010)
“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Joanna Powell Colbert at a couple of Tarot events, and I have been impressed with what a beautiful spirit she has, so it’s no surprise that the deck that has emerged from her heart is quite lovely as well.
Joanna devoted nine years to making the Gaian Tarot using an intricate process that employed colored pencils and which rendered images that are photorealistic. (I’m constantly amazed at how well she did that!) The result, obviously a labor of love, is a powerful deck of rich symbolism, multicultural themes, and evocative beauty. And although it was created with an eye toward earth-centered spirituality, its appeal is universal.
Joanna graciously provided detailed answers to my questions for this interview, and I think you’ll enjoy reading what she has to say about her deck, which includes some fun behind-the-scenes stories.”

Interviewed by Arwen of Musings on the Tarot (October 2009)
Today, please welcome Joanna Powell Colbert and her Gaian Tarot. This interview is comprised of answers from both the author/artist (A) as well as the deck (D). I give the questions and then the deck is used to answer the questions. So what you read is what Joanna pulled for each answer.
My own JPC testimony is that I love her art. It is real. It pulls me into the card offering me such beauty to explore. My personal favorite is the 3 of Cups which features three otters. To me, they symbolize my own motto of “Seek joy, y’all” because of the playfulness that Joanna captured.
